A Theme of The Metamorphosis: Self Identification
77In The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, Gregor, the main character, has drastically morphed into a ‘monstrous vermin’ and through the story, Gregor wonders what he actually is, which creates the theme of personal identification and how people in today’s world are wondering who they really are.
Kafka writes, “‘What’s happen to me,’ he thought.”` In the opening of this potent story, Gregor has awaken from his apprehensive dreams to find out that something has gone horribly wrong, in which Gregor asks himself the somber questions, “what has happened to me?” and “what am I exactly?”. Just as Gregor is trying to find his true identity, people in today’s world ask the question Gregor asked because they want to know who they are.
People in today’s world ask the question that Gregor asked in the story; what am I? These people do this in order to find their self purpose in life, which can be found by reading and studying God’s Word. This longing for self identification in today’s world and Gregor’s longing for self identification in the story creates the theme of self identification.
One of the themes of The Metamorphosis can be self identification, which can also be seen in today’s world. When dealing with today’s world and not so much including Gregor’s case, three sonorous verses can help these purpose-seeking people with this longing for self identification: Exodus 9:16, Colossians 2:2, and Proverbs 1:7: which say in order, “But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”, “My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ.”, and “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” If these lost people will read these verses and understand God’s purpose for them is to become followers of Jesus Christ and spread that good news to all the earth, they will know the answers to their personal identification questions.
In conclusion, the placid short story The Metamorphosis and the current crisis in the world today of trying to find out who you are form the theme of the longing for self identification.
