Conservatism or Libertarianism: Where the Heck does Ron Paul stand?
61
Much speculation has surrounded the question. Do Ron Paul's views align with Conservatism or Libertarianism? In other words, is he a conservative or is he a libertarian?
Let's look at a few of his stances. Ron Paul supports the New York mosque, opposes the wars in the Middle East, opposes the effective waterboarding treatment, and the list goes on. Now, let's look at the Conservative stance on these issues. Conservatives oppose the New York mosque for moral and ethic purposes, support the war efforts in the Middle East and the killing of Osama bin Laden, and support waterboarding as a way of gaining intelligent from sharp terrorists. So no, Paul's stances on social and foreign issues do not align with the mainstream Conservative views.
The simple fact is that Ron Paul is a Libertarian; he is NOT a conservative. Some may say libertarians are conservatives - that is far from the truth. Why?
Libertarians are in support of a third party system where elections include Democrats, Republicans, AND Libertarians. In these elections, the mainstream Republican vote is split between the Republican Party and the Libertarian Party. In other words, Libertarians take away crucial votes from conservative Republicans who are trying to defeat liberal Democrats. If Libertarians are conservative, why do they this? It is all a part of the Third Party system. And adding insult to injury, third party candidates have little chance of winning the election.
Simply, Ron Paul is not a conservative, he is a libertarian. Anyone who calls him a Conservative are off-based and dead wrong - he is a libertarian and should not receive the nomination for President in 2012.
