Fly in Communities and Airparks

I decided to write a hub about fly in communities and air parks after discovering an air park near where I live, AirPark Dallas. They are certainly interesting little communities with much fascination.

How They Work

The concept of a fly in community is very simple: its a neighborhood, mostly for the wealthy, where the residents either enjoy flying as a hobby or work far away and fly to work. Basically, the air port run way is situated in the middle of the community and the houses are located around the air port so when the resident lands, he or she can drive the plane right into their air plane garage or by the residence. Picture a regular air port but instead of the large commerical buildings, picture affluent residences!

In General

The homes located around the runway are generally called airport homes. Florida is a state with many fly in communities, but most of the 50 states have them. The communities are highly restricted and public access is not allowed; the air port runway is simply for the use of the residents and/or planes that are having in flight trouble.

Like I said above, air parks do sometimes, unfortunately, serve the purpose of a crash landing site for troubled pilot or pilots. For example, at Arthur Dunn Airpark, a plane crashed off the runway and killed 2 people while injuring 2. The problem with airparks, as I see it, is the non presence of emergency crews and vehicles. I have never been on scene to a air park, but I am sure they have some way of contacting emergency crews as soon as possible to save the victims of the accident. However all in all, plane crashes are very rare on air park runways.

As I see it, its a great and interesting way to live. Sharing a runway with other wealthy residents, fly in and fly out, it is so cool!

Most of the residents that live in air parks are aviation addicts, as I call them, and who love to fly. Heck, if he or she spends thousands of dollars on their own plane, they sure do love flying, which is very neat.

The concept of an airpark is simple. Basically the residents who live in the airpark simply have their morning coffee and instead of starting up their car to drive to work, they start up their plane to go for a morning fly. Some residents may actually go to work and them come home and fly during the evening. Just picture your house and your garage...except with an air plane hanger off to the side where you would park your air plane. Whenever they feel like flying, they simply start up the plane, steer off onto the runway, fly all they want to, then fly back in and park the plane back into the hanger. Most residents, I assume, also enjoy travelling.

Interesting fact: John Travolta and his family live in a fly in community in Florida.

Location and Styles

Fly in communities and airparks all have a variety of locations and styles. For example, AirPark Dallas is located right next to major commerical buildings and right in the middle of a major city. However, there are some airparks that are secluded out in the country. Airparks also have styles. The main style of an airpark is to have the residences situated around the actual runway, but some airparks do offer a different style in location.

Thanks for reading about these very cool neighborhoods and estates!

Thanks, John, for an excellent article. What do they do about air traffic control. Is there a tower, manned by flight controllers to make sure two planes don't take off at the same time? What's the cost of belonging to such a club or neighborhood. Of course you need to buy a big house with a big garage and hanger for the plane. What level income would you say one must be at in order to enjoy this kind of thing? I'd be interested, also, as to which Florida cities or places these are found. Thanks for a great Hub.

I loved your photographs, too. Don White

I guess they may have a schedule or something like that where residents must sign when they take off and will arrive back. I know the cost is pretty high and the homes are pretty pricey as well. The income would be different in every state I would guess.

Thanks Don

Great Hub! But a good question up there - how does the airports locally manage to keep on top of it, it must take a lot of organisation! I wish we had this in the UK. There are private airfields but its different here. I think the Queen has some tucked away in her various back gardens! LOL!

Thanks for the comment Cheeky Girl. I would think that since all the residents use the runway, they would all have to pitch in some money for maintenance and all, if that is what you are talking about. And yes, I can bet you the Queen has an airpark, lol

Good hub! We have one of these places just west of Brisbane, in Queensland Australia. It's not expensive, though. Mostly people have a shed for the plane and live in a caravan or furbish part of the shed for living quarters

Airparks are communities made of people sharing the same interest. There are a lot of people living in airparks that don't own a plane. Many have motorhomes and or car collections that go in the hangar. Most people find aircraft exciting and enjoy being around them. So, if you have the need for storing your passion that won't fit in a garage, take a look at airparks.

the closest big airport or control tower will have control of their surounding airfields. that's how we do it here.
