Police Scanning for Dummies
Everyone at least once in their lifetime will hear this phrase from someone: “You will never guess what I heard on my police scanner last night!! Dude it was awesome!!” And they will be correct. Police scanners have been around for a while, since the 30’s actually. One question I get from people is, “Is that thing legal?!” And I just tell them that I bought it at RadioShack, so it has to be legal. Anyway, please read on to see what all you can do with the simple device called the police scanner.
What exactly IS a Police Scanner?
A police scanner, short and simple, is a device where you can tune into police radio frequencies and listen to what is going on! Most police scanners will have to be programmed to the frequencies you want and the list can be easily obtained by the store you bought your scanner. Your police scanner will bring you much enjoyment, I guarantee it!
Police scanners can be purchased at stores like RadioShack or any electronic store. They usually have a range of about 200-250 dollars. I got mine for 240, which wasn’t bad considering all the fun it has brought me. It is also fun to alert your friends that there is something going down close to them!
Why a Police Scanner?
I get this question a lot too. For the most part, it’s just down right fun to listen too. You hear of a shooting on blah blah street and turn it on and listen to the whole thing go down before the news even knows! It’s always fun to watch the news when something is going on because you can correct them if they are wrong!
Police scanning is also a great way to stay in touch with the community and to keep base with what is going down in the city. If you live in a small town, police scanners can be a lot of fun because you know that exact location at where the event is taking place. In big cities, you don’t really know where all the streets are, so you are just listening, which isn’t bad, it’s just better to know where the cop are talking about.
Keeping a Log
Keeping a log of things you hear on the scanner is also fun in itself. Keeping a log allows you to look back, see what happened and you remember right where you were the time it happened! It’s crazy, but awesome! Keeping a log can just be on a piece of paper or even a book. You can see some of the big events I have heard on my scanner on my website, http://johnburgdorf.webs.com/ . Look under the ‘Police Scanner Stuff!’ tab to find it. That tab also has info pertaining to police scanners.
Well, its Time!
Now what are you still sitting there for! Go out and get one! Ha, it may not seem too much fun when your just talking about it, but once you have it in your possession and listen to it, you will see what kind of fun I am talking about!
I hope I educated you about these great devices. So much so that you should buy one! But if you already have one, PLEASE post some cool stuff you have heard on yours. I always love to see what other peeps have heard.

Hy John:
Last year I was staying with friends in New York, and was delighted to find one of the people we hung out with had an Yupiteru MVT 7100. (Called a Jupiter in the USA, he had the Yupiteru make!) I was amazed at what could be heard on this little critter! I was shocked to discover that people's baby monitors and even phone calls could be over heard. The fact that he was a radio Ham is interesting, but I prefer my privacy, and I prefer to keep what I say on my fone...on my fone! I think they do have a use to people, but I worry about what a scanner might do in the hands of a criminal...
This is an interesting Hub. You sure got me thinking.
