12 Popular Christmas Traditions - Special Christmas Traditions to Celebrate Christ's Birth and The Holiday Season
66
Everyone loves Christmas. There is no doubt that every person who has the opportunity to enjoy Christmas's joys love it. Along with the great celebration of Christmas comes traditions started or continued by most families across the world. Here are some special traditions that America (and my family) enjoy each year during Christmas time.
Look at Christmas Lights
Where I live in Arlington, Texas, we have many homes around that have Christmas lights, including ours. We love to all pile up in one car and drive around looking at lights. There is a man right down the street from us who decorates his house beautifully with lights. Also, there is a whole neighborhood called Interlochen where we go look as well. Its pretty easy to find Christmas lights in your area. Either a big event will be on the internet or big homes with lots of lights will sometimes be on television. Especially the ones on Light-O-Rama that are set to Christmas music.
Christmas Eve Service
Most churches will have a Christmas Eve service, also known as a candle light service, where the members of the church gather together, light candles and sing Christmas carols to celebrate the Eve of Jesus' birth.
Christmas Eve Presents
Some families get together Christmas Eve at a grandparents house, aunt or uncles and open a Christmas Eve round of presents.
Christmas Caroling
Some families, not mine though cause none of us can sing, go out and sing Christmas carols to their neighbors. This can be fun because you get to meet your neighbors through Christmas carols!
Putting out Christmas Lights
As I said above, Christmas lights are a great tradition and everyone loves them. Whether its one strand or 200,000 lights, Christmas lights are very pretty, fun, and create a great family tradition.
Christmas Decorations
This is one of my favorites: putting up Christmas decorations inside. Lining the staircase with garland and lights, putting up the Christmas trees and lining it with colorful strands and lights, putting out wreaths, Christmas plates, Christmas ornaments, Christmas candles, Christmas objects; all these are examples of Christmas decoration that my family and many others around the world practice too.
Nativity Scene
The reason for the season cannot be forgotten! Putting the nativity scene up is the single most important thing to do over the holidays. It represents the single core value of Christmas and reminds us that Christmas isn't about the Christmas and egg nog, its about the birth of the one true Lord Jesus Christ thousands of years ago.
Christmas Programs
Many schools, churches, or organizations have special and sometimes popular Christmas shows full of fun carols and funny skits which really get you into the Christmas spirit!
Christmas Dinner
Every Christmas day after the presents and the Bible reading, we all sit down as a family with my grandparents and enjoy Christmas day lunch cooked by all the women. We sit and eat while we talk about the great things of Christmas.
Play the ABC Game
Either while my family eats or after, we all gather in a circle and play a fun game called the ABC game. We start in a circle and each person, starting with the letter A, goes around and says a word that starts with A about Christmas time!
Read the Christmas Story
Every Christmas morning after we celebrate with family and open gifts, we always sit down and read the Christmas story, found in Luke 2:1-20 on the Holy Bible. After that, we pray and thank God for the gifts and sending his son to be born.
Volunteering Your Time
Every Christmas Eve day before all the Christmas Eve events take place, me, my brother and my dad volunteer our time at a place called Mission Arlington, a shelter where I live to help feed, clothe, and house the homeless and needy. Mission Arlington every year has a ton of bikes come in from people who give them away and needy kids sign up to get the bikes. After they sign up, we pick the bikes up and deliver them to the kids at their houses. The kids are so happy and filled with joy! It is really a great experience.
Thanks for reading and have a Merry Christmas if you haven't already.

Nice article, John. Great things to do. I'd never heard of the ABC game and next year might try it. Beats spin the bottle. Don White
