Well, my family decided to travel a new route this summer. Usually, we head to Mustang Island in Port Aransas, Texas on North Padre Island; however, my mother stumbled upon a newsletter article advertising a week of fun in East Texas. The article described two family attractions: New York, Texas ZipLine Adventures near LaRue/New York, Texas and Lake Palestine. We decided to plan a 4-day family vacation in August and visit these recommended attractions.

First Stop - New York, Texas ZipLine Adventures

First was to take a short road trip out east to New York, Texas. We followed tree lined, one lane roads until we arrived at the New York, Texas ZipLine Adventure residence. The attraction is located on a hilltop at the home of the Shultz family. Mr. and Mrs. Shultz, along with their grown children, run the place. The hilltop home gives way to a vast wooded area perfect for ziplining. We met the family and they showed us everything we needed to know about zipling at their attraction. Once our harnesses were on and our gear was straight, we walked a short distance to the first zip line. One line lead to another as we zipped our way above the tree tops and enjoyed the marvelous Texas scenery. After four ziplines ranging in 100 to 400 feet long and 2 small hikes, we finally finished with the grand finale: the 900 foot/30 second zip line from hilltop to hilltop. Words cannot describe how much fun the New York, Texas ZipLine Adventures was for me and my family!!

Positives: Very fast and thrilling, no wait, kind service, free water, great owners.

Negatives: It's hot in the summer!

Second Stop - Lake Palestine

After flying above the East Texas trees for nearly 2 hours, a short 20 minute car ride to beautiful Lake Palestine renewed our energy. We found the Lake Palestine Resort on the southwest side of the lake and ate lunch at the Lake Palestine Resort Grill. Check in was near the time we finished lunch, so after eating, we checked into our 3 bedroom/2 bathroom log cabin style home. The home had 3 bedrooms: 2 with 2 twin beds and one with 3 twin beds. Another nook off the main living area also contained 2 twin beds. The home had plenty of space as well as a nice kitchen, eating area and living area.

The main office had a variety of things to do on the lake. The first day, we rented kayaks and canoes and explored around the lake for an hour.  We were even able to row a little ways to our cabin on the lake to say "Hi" to the grandparents (who, for some reason, didn't go kayaking!).  After spending most of our energy rowing around, we drove a little ways into town and found a small dollar store to pour our money into.  Then, we went home and relaxed until it was time to fish at dusk!  We caught many fish and had a great time.  The next day, we rented the pontoon boat and spent a whole day on the lake chillin' and swimmin'.  Unfortunately, the next day it was time to go.  We packed up and left after a fun filled 3 days.

Positives: Good food, great location, scenery, excellent living areas and services, cheap

Negatives: Lake Palestine is known to have many stumps.  We were lucky and managed to stay clear of the stumps; however, if you do not know the lake, it will be hard!

All in all, I would give my experience a 9.5 rating out of 10. Very few setbacks cleared the way for a fun filled 4 days!

I too have stayed at the Duck Inn on Lake Palestine and went to New York, Texas ZipLine Adventures. The Duck Inn was great and peaceful.......the Zip lines at New York,Tx Zip line Adventures were just AWESOME! I hightly recommend both of them. Later that day we visited the Fish Hatchery in Athens on recommendations from the kind owners of the ziplines. They were very helpful in us finding other things it the area to do as well.
