Twitter Tweet Tips: How to Effectively Get Followers on Twitter
By johnb0127
I admit it: I am addicted to Twitter. Who knew life could be so entertaining with the use of a 140 character tweet status update. Twitter has become one of the top leaders in social networking; the only site beating Twitter would be Facebook. The difference: Facebook has nearly 500 million users when Twitter has roughly 18 million (and each growing daily!). So why is Twitter just so fun? In my humble opinion, Twitter has skyrocketed due to two reasons: 1) Easy to share, display, give, link, and/or speak about different topics ranging from real estate to reality TV shows and 2) Direct access to celebrities.
Twitter becomes exponentially enjoyable when a user gains many followers, or friends. With many followers, a tweeter knows that their tweets are valuable and read. But, how can a tweeter receive tons of followers? The process, to believe it or not, is very simple:
1. Tweet!
Tweet, tweet, tweet until your keyboard explodes! You can tweet about politics, fashion, TV, anything! That is one of the great things about Twitter. You can slowly grow followers just by "regular tweeting", meaning no hashtags or mentions (if you don't know what these are, read below).

2. Tweet with Hashtags and/or Mentions
Hashtags: Twitter allows its users to categorize each tweet they send by putting it into a category window, represented by the hashtag (#). For example, say I tweet the following:
" Did you catch The Apprentice on NBC tonight? #TheApprentice #NBC "
You will see that I hashtagged TheApprentice and NBC; this means two things: that my tweet was categorized with all other tweets, by users who used the same hashtags, in a category window. So, if you read my tweet and saw the hashtag, you could click on it and Twitter would take you to a window with several tweets including that hashtag. Once hashtagged, it means other users around the world will be able to see your tweet and potentially follow you. Why? Because it is clear both users enjoy The Apprentice.
Mentions: Another way is to mention other users in your tweets. For example, if I tweet:
" Hey everyone. @DonaldJTrump and @IvankaTrump will be on The Apprentice this week "
The tweet mentioned the user Donald Trump and Ivanka Trump. Again, this means a couple things. First, that the tweet will be posted on your tweet wall with other following tweets. Second, the tweet is sent is Donald Trump and Ivanka Trump's mention tab; whenever they click on this tab, they will see the tweet. Since both are celebrities, you can imagine how many mentions they get! If they look at the right time, one may "mention" you back something like: " Thanks! @John_Burgdorf". Which brings me to the next point:

3. Connect with Celebrities/Famous People
Twitter is known for its easy access to talk to celebrities and famous people: all you have to do is send out a tweet with a mention. For example, Apple CEO Steve Jobs' has a Twitter; if you would like to send him a tweet, type one up and mention @ceoSteveJobs in it. He may see it and @ you back!
Whenever a celebrity or famous person mentions you in a tweet, you rack in the followers!! Say The Jonas Brothers saw a tweet you sent out saying:
" I Love the JO BROS!! @nickjonas @kevinjonas @joejonas "
If they happen to look at their mention tab, it is very possible. They may send out a tweet saying "Gee, thanks @PollyMcPolly for the support and love!" If they do, your followers will pour in!

4. Follow Friday, #FF
Follow Friday is probably my favorite Twitter activity. Every Friday, tweeters have the ability to send out a tweet or tweets containing great users to follow and the hashtag #FF. For example, say I sent out the following tweet at noon on Friday:
" #FF @TwitterRocks @HubPages @AlsoRocks @FacebookStinks @TooAddicting! "
The tweet would be sent to a category tab with all other #FF tweets, which exceed into the thousands. The tweet would show your followers and other Twitter users great people to follow. It's so simple! I send out about 20 #FF tweets every Friday gaining me AND my tweeters followers.

5. Follow People
Following people is probably the easiest step when getting followers. Most of the time, tweeters will follow you back once you follow them. For example, if you follow 100 people, 30-40 will immediately follow you back. It's a good way to get followers; however, they may not find interest in your tweets and un-follow you.
Which brings up another point: follow people who tweet and enjoy the same topics as you!

6. Tell People
If you are a big tweeter, you will want followers. Tell people to follow you through your blog, hubs, hubpages profile, website, Facebook profile, text messages, email signatures, anything.
